A fourteen-year-old Ethiopian girl, Fortuna, arrives at a refugee center run by monks in the Alps. Bereft and lonely, she falls in love with Kabir – the only other African in the whole place. Soon, however, Kabir gets arrested. Fortuna is already pregnant and she desperately wants to have this child – even before it is born, she considers it her closest companion she has in this unfamiliar world. But the European mentors have a completely different opinion. In her struggle, the girl finds an ally and a supporter in the person of the abbot, played brilliantly by the German actor, Bruno Ganz. An extremely appealing portrait of contemporary migration and the clash of cultures.
